Behind The Song Sundays

Today’s Behind The Song Sunday is “Behind Closed Doors” from my album ‘What Are You Waiting For?”.

“Behind Closed Doors” was written back in 2009 and is based on personal experiences. Growing up, people that didn’t get the chance to actually know me would jump to conclusions about me. They’d see my picture and automatically think “She’s a slut” (True Story and yet none of my pictures have ever been slutty), or else they’d just assume that I’m a strong person because I didn’t start crying when I was teased, instead I laughed it off. It sucked, but I grew a lot from experiences like that. Still not many people get to know the real me because I always keep my guard up, that damned wall to protect myself so I don’t get hurt… Although to the few that I have let in, I’d do anything for them.  So, this song is a little insider (but no too much) of me personally.

When I wrote this song, I originally had it start with just my guitar rift then the band coming in after. Last second before recording the track for the album, I decided that I wanted the bass to start the song and then have the electric come in.  My bass player/producer Adam was not really thrilled about this, because he wasn’t fond of starting the song off by himself on bass. In the end, I won (lol) and I’m glad we decided to keep it with the bass starting the song off. It just seems have a better flow.

Behind The Song Sundays

Today’s Behind The Song Sunday is “Back To You” from my album ‘What Are You Waiting For?”.

The original version of song was actually an online collaboration that I did with an amazing and talented DJ based in Toronto.  She composed the music and was looking for someone to add lyrics to it. She contacted me through a music site we were both on asking if I could come up with lyrics for the song. I’ve never really done anything like that before and was like “Yes… Yes I’ll do it” then quickly thought afterwards “What did I just agree to?” haha.  Well, she sent me the music and I listened to it and as soon as I heard the progression going into the chorus… I began singing “if I could rewrite it all…” and within a couple minutes the chorus was at least written.
The rest of the words came to me very easily as it slowly became about the last conversation I had on the phone with my Baba on Christmas morning ‘08.  She apologized to me for leaving when I was little and never staying in contact with us… she wished she could of turned back time for all she missed.  She passed away the following month in 2009.

“Back To You” became one of my personal favourite songs and I had asked permission to re-record the song with my band to put on my next album.  After getting the A-okay, the version we created was re-born and I fell more in love with it. (You can still listen to the collaboration recording on YouTube as a fan made an amazing video to go along with it.)

Behind The Song Sundays

Today’s Behind The Song Sundays is “Heart & Soul” off my last album ‘My New Normal’.

I wrote “Heart & Soul” back in December of 2012, at the time the person I was seeing wanted me to write them a song… so I attempted my first “Happy” song. (I say “Happy” because I’ve come to the realization that most of my songs are pretty depressing/angry/sad)
Needless to say, the relationship crashed and burned pretty much after I sent the song. I’ve learnt my lesson and will no longer write songs for people… or if I do, I will not tell them lol.

I had a very hard time contemplating about recording this song on ‘My New Normal’ mostly because I hated it, but others who have heard it liked it quite a bit. So with the help of my awesome/talented friend Lindsey White (who played piano and did backup vocals that made the song way better), I put my mature non-hating pants on and recorded the song.

Behind The Song Sunday

Today’s Behind The Song Sunday is “Walk On” off my album ‘What Are You Waiting For”.

This song was written back in 2003/2004 and was part of the most creative breakup I’ve ever gone through. At the time I was dating another singer/songwriter and I don’t really remember all that happened, but we got in a fight about something and I asked for some space. Well, I then started receiving songs that were not so nice that they wrote about me (one I still have and listen to often lol), so I got fed up and wrote “Walk On” where I quoted a line from one of my early songs ‘Had To Be’…”Didn’t you remember strings would never be attached to me”. I did a really crappy recording of the song, sent it off to them and well… that was the end of the relationship.

“Walk On” has become a fan favourite and has been used in videos on YouTube. If I remember correctly, I think one was for a Wedding video… still don’t understand that one. Haha.

Hope you enjoy the tune and the rest of your weekend!!

Behind The Song Sundays

Today’s Behind The Song Sunday is “Someday” off my album ‘What Are You Waiting For’.

This song was written back in 2002 and it didn’t make the cut for my first EP ‘renovations’. Not too sure why I didn’t choose it, but am happy I didn’t. It gave me the time to work on the song more where I changed the feel and dynamics that I had first come up with on the rough demo.

The chorus of the song was written first and was based off a conversation I had with someone who wanted to date me at the time, but I just didn’t like them in that way. Which they then tried to change my mind… it didn’t work.
The rest of the verses I just made up… wish I had something more to say about them but I don’t. (haha)

Behind The Song Sundays

Today’s Behind The Song Sunday is “So-Called Life” off my last album ‘My New Normal’.

While I was working on this song in 2012, The people of Egypt stood up together and over turned their Government. It wasn’t too long after, that others around the world started taking a more powerful stance for their rights and for their voices to be heard. I found it very empowering watching society come together fighting for what they deserve and it was very inspirational for me while writing this song.

Behind The Song Sundays

Today’s Behind The Song Sunday is “About You” off my album ‘What Are You Waiting For’.

“About You” was written back in 2006… At that point in time, I had just left a relationship and took a well deserved hiatus from a long time friendship. Both were extremely full of toxicity, lies, chaoticness and I needed to distant myself from all that BS. So the song is a mixture of those two worlds melded into one.

It is one of my favourite songs that I love to play live and I hold dear to my heart as a little polite “up yours” reminder to those two people.

You can listen to the song here:

I hope you enjoy the tune and please let me know if there’s a song I haven’t done yet that you’d like to know the back story to.

Have a wonderful day!!

Behind The Song Sundays

Todays ‘Behind The Song’ is “All I Need” off my last album “My New Normal”.

This song was written while in Dartmouth, NS for Music Business. I stayed in a place that use to be an old B & B. My room had awful Pink wallpaper with cracks and what looked like water damage. I called it my pink room of solitude. (I cannot stand pink btw) Spent many hours in that room strumming my guitar while watching the crazy shenanigans of Jessica Flecther on Murder She Wrote lol.

Besides the pink room of solitude that I sing about… there’s really no back story to why I wrote it. Sheer boredom I guess.

One fact about this song that I don’t normally share: I finished writing this song Mar. 22, 2013…had a nice long telephone chat with my Dad before he and my mom went out dancing that night. He asked me if I’d written any songs… I lied and said no as I was going to do a rough recording and send it to them after. Little did I know that after ending the call with my Dad that it would be the last time I’d get to speak to him. He passed away during the night/morning in his sleep and this song would be the last song I’ve written to date.

During the recording of this song and well the entire album… I played my Dad’s Martin Guitar on every track. (which my brother and I bought for him on his 60th.) It was the only way/thing I could think of by paying tribute to him.

Another little fact but regarding title of the album: My mom wanted me to go to a grief counseling group session with her, I really didnt want to go and at the time was having difficulty coming up with an album title. After saying yes to going.. the first thing that the counselor said was “Welcome to your new normal”.
And that’s when the title “My New Normal” came to be.
