Behind The Song Sundays

Todays ‘Behind The Song’ is “Had To Be”.

It is based on a very short lived (two weeks, not even) relationship, if you can even call it that . It was weird, that’s the only way I can think of putting it now…

The person I was seeing at the time told me they were in love with me only a week and a half in… and that was odd for me at the time because I wasn’t even sure if I liked them. They became a little obsessed too…constantly calling and calling back just seconds after talking. I couldn’t take it anymore and broke things off with them while at a friends place…left… leaving them with no ride home.

A couple years later while at work they saw me and continued to stop by (kinda stalkerish) for weeks and finally told them to leave me alone…

I wrote the song after this experience in early 2000 and did a rough recording of it with just vocals, guitar and bass.
After meeting Adam (Pollution Lake Sound) through my brother, we started recording my EP ‘renovations’ this song was the 4th track. Neat fact… we used my grandfathers metal LP to get the old record sound on the beginning and end of the song.

The lyrics are a jab at the entire situation… “I’m sorry for not loving you the way that you love me, but I guess that’s just the way it had to be..” probably my favourite line from the song. Sorry if you thought the song was about a broken heart…

Enjoy and have a great week!

Behind The Song Sundays

I’m not one to talk about the story behind my songs because I love hearing what your take on the song is. I always find it interesting how everyone can interpret a song differently and can use it to help with whats going on in their life at that moment…

So, I’ve decided to start a weekly “Behind The Song Sundays” and I’m going to start things off with my personal favourite ‘Falling From Grace’.

I wrote this song just over 9yrs ago while driving home with my parents after a very emotional day.
My father had recieved a phone call from a close friend earlier that day and we found out that their son had taken his life.
We were asked to come over and spend some time with them.
When we got there, there was quite a bit of people sitting around and sharing stories about his life.
We stayed for a couple of hours and then made our way back home.

It was a very somber and quiet drive. While I stared out the window, the lyrics popped in my head…”I’m falling from grace and I just can’t hold on…” over and over again these lyrics replayed in my mind.
Once home, I went to my room, grabbed my guitar and started playing random chords…. The lyrics poured out.

I made a very rough recording of the song with just acoustic and sent it to Adam (Bassist/Producer/Engineer/Pollution Lake Sound) and told him I wanted to put this song on the next album. I had no idea which way to go with the song at the time which turned out to be alright…

A couple weeks later, Adam sent me a recording he had put together for the song. He added drums, bass, lead guitar and strings. I instantly fell in love with the feel of the song and we went with that direction.

To this day, I have not performed this song live… believe me we tried practicing with the band many of times but it just never felt right. I do hope one day that I can play it live and still envoke the same emotions I did that day while doing the vocals for the master.

I would love to hear your take on the song as well and if there’s a song of mine you’d love the back story to, leave it in the comments below.
